Your adventure begins at the husky kennel in the Pasvik Valley, about 40 minutes by car from Kirkenes, where you meet the dogs, help prepare the teams and learn the basics of driving your own sled. Once everyone is ready, you set off with your dog team on an approximately 15 km journey through the winter landscape towards Namdalen Wilderness Lodge. Along the way, you stop in the wilderness, make a fire in the snow and enjoy a warm lunch before continuing across frozen Langfjordvatnet to the lodge. Your luggage will already be waiting for you when you arrive. Hannah and Eirik return to the kennel with the dog teams while you settle into your room, enjoy coffee or tea and relax after the journey. Later, gather around the campfire or in our cozy, floor-heated dining hall for a hot dinner while the wood-fired sauna heats up. Spend the evening relaxing in the sauna, cooling down in the snow and stepping outside to watch for the Northern Lights. After a night in your cozy room, wake up to breakfast at the lodge before returning to Kirkenes the following day.
Namdalen Wilderness Lodge is a secluded former farmstead on the shores of Lake Langfjordvatnet in the Pasvik Valley, around 30 minutes from Kirkenes. Surrounded by forest and with no nearby neighbours, road noise or light pollution, it feels much further away than it actually is.
For the night, Namdalen is yours. You are not checking into a hotel or sharing the property with other guests. Instead, you get a private place in the wilderness where you can slow down after the day’s adventure, warm up around the fire, enjoy the wood-fired sauna and step outside whenever you like to look for the Northern Lights. The lack of artificial light also creates excellent conditions for stargazing and Aurora viewing.
The lodge is rustic and intentionally simple, offering a taste of traditional Norwegian cabin life rather than conventional hotel comfort. The different buildings of the old farmstead have been given new life, including the Rustic Barn, the old Chicken House and a traditional Turf Hut. All buildings used by guests are heated, either with electric heaters or wood-burning stoves.
Water comes from a well, and there are no conventional showers. Instead, the wood-fired sauna is where you warm up and wash after a day outside. There are four toilets on the property, including three heated outhouses and one indoor toilet.
Where you sleep depends on your group size and your preferences. All guest accommodation is heated, and because Namdalen is reserved exclusively for your group, you have the property to yourselves.
The Rustic Barn: The main guesthouse has four heated bedrooms with space for up to nine guests in total, as well as a shared living room. Couples, families and groups can all stay here, making it the more comfortable and convenient option.
The Turf Hut: Looking for something a little more unusual? You can choose to spend the night in the Turf Hut, a small, turf-covered cabin built into the earth. A wood-burning stove keeps it warm, with cosy sleeping quarters for two. It is the most rustic sleeping option at Namdalen, with the nearest toilet around 15 to 20 metres away, but also one of the most memorable. Step outside on a clear winter night and you might find the Northern Lights directly overhead.
One of the best ways to warm up after a day of Arctic adventure is in Namdalen’s traditional wood-fired sauna. We heat it to around 80°C while you enjoy the fire and dinner, so it is ready for you to relax in later in the evening.
There is no running water at Namdalen, so the sauna is also where you wash during your stay, just as you would at a traditional Norwegian cabin. Between sauna rounds, step outside to cool down in the snow or simply stand beneath the winter sky.
And keep an eye on the sky. With no artificial light around the lodge, you might step out of the sauna to find the Northern Lights above you.
