This guided e-fatbike tour takes you out into the surrounding landscape of Kirkenes — through forest, past lakes, and up to a viewpoint with a 360-degree outlook over the town and the only iron ore mine in Norway.
The first stop is Bunkersbyen, a stretch of WWII bunkers scattered through the terrain. In many parts of Europe, sites like this would be fenced off or turned into museums. Here, they remain openly accessible to curious explorers. From there, the route continues to the memorial for the 11 freedom fighters who helped local partisans gather information on nazi activity in 1943. The trail then climbs toward Appelsinstien, a viewpoint giving a full 360-degree view across the Kirkenes area, including the iron ore mine that has shaped the town’s economy for over a century. Here, we enjoy the view with a hot drink and a snack before returning to the our office in Kirkenes. Along the way, we share insights into local nature, history and everyday life in this unique borderland region of Norway, Russia and Finland.
The wide tires keep you stable on uneven ground, and the electric assist takes the edge off the climbs.
