Join us on a scenic hike to one of the most striking coastal viewpoints near Kirkenes – the Bøkfjord Lighthouse, a historic lighthouse that guided ships into Kirkenes and stands today as a protected coastal landmark. Along the way, you’ll experience the characteristic nature of Northern Norway: birch forest, rocky ground, and changing terrain that keeps the hike engaging.
At the Bøkfjord Lighthouse, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the open Barents sea. Bøkfjord Lighthouse was first established in 1910 on the southern side of the Varangerfjord, shortly after mining operations began in Kirkenes. The growing export of iron ore led to increased ship traffic, making the lighthouse an important navigation point for vessels entering the fjord.
During World War II, Nazi forces took control of the lighthouse. When they retreated in 1944, the entire facility was destroyed. Around the lighthouse, you can still find visible remains from the German occupation during World War II, such as the remains of a former nazi coastal fort. After the war, the lighthouse was rebuilt in a new form, designed in a functionalist architectural style by architects Blakstad and Munthe-Kaas. It remained in operation until 2006, when it became the last manned lighthouse in Norway to be automated. Today, the site is protected as a cultural heritage monument.
We share further insights into local nature and life in this borderland area. We’ll take time to enjoy the views, capture photos, and soak in the atmosphere before heading back.
This tour can also be extended into an overnight adventure with tents. Instead of returning the same day, we set up camp near the coast. We can bring fishing rods, giving you the chance to try your luck and catch your own dinner. Spend the evening by the fire, enjoy a simple outdoor meal, and experience the unique atmosphere of the Arctic coastline. This experience is particularly special during the midnight sun period (mid-May to end of July), when the sun never sets and the landscape is bathed in endless light.
