Just a short drive from Kirkenes lies a little-known piece of wartime history: a German torpedo battery built to protect the Bøkfjord against Allied naval attacks. Today, the site is abandoned — no signs, no fences — just rusting concrete and moss-covered remains, hidden among the Arctic hills.
After a 30-minute drive from Kirkenes, we begin the hike. The trail winds through birch forest, rocky hills, and open terrain with sweeping views over the fjord. It’s about 3 km each way, with a total elevation change of around 200 meters. The pace is relaxed, with stops to enjoy the views and learn about the area’s history.
At the battery, we take time to explore the old structures — firing positions, tunnels, and supply buildings — and talk about the harsh conditions under which it was built. Your guide will share the story of the Polish prisoners who constructed it, and how Kirkenes became one of the most heavily bombed towns in Europe during WWII.
We pause for a hot drink and snack at the site before hiking back. This tour offers not just a walk through Arctic nature, but a rare glimpse into a dramatic chapter of WWII — in a place most travelers never see.

Expect longer durations, more demanding terrain (steep, snowy, or uneven), and greater exposure to the elements. These tours may involve elevation gain, extended hiking or biking, or navigating deep snow. Previous experience is helpful but not always required.
The hike is about 6 km round-trip, with 200 meters of elevation gain and some uneven, rocky sections. A good sense of balance is required, especially on narrow trails and stone surfaces. Suitable for guests in average physical condition who enjoy being outdoors for several hours.
