Hidden at sea level near the entrance of the Bøkfjord lies one of Kirkenes’ least-known World War II sites: a German torpedo battery built into the Arctic rock. Unlike typical museums, this place has no signs, no fences — just raw history in the wilderness.
Your journey starts with a short transfer from Kirkenes to the trailhead (about 30 minutes). From there, we strap on snowshoes and begin a scenic 3–4 hour round-trip hike through frozen forest and hilly terrain. The total elevation change is about 200 meters, with some short but steep sections along the way.
Reaching the battery feels like stepping into another world. Snow-covered concrete structures, crumbling tunnels, and rusted metal lie almost untouched since the war. The site was built by Polish prisoners under brutal conditions and once formed part of the Nazi defense system to block Allied ships from reaching Kirkenes.
We take our time to explore, share stories, and enjoy hot drinks and a snack near the ruins. There are no signs or paths here — just history, silence, and the sound of the wind over the fjord. After a break, we snowshoe back to the van and return to Kirkenes.
Depending on snow conditions, the tour may be done as a snowshoe hike or a regular winter hike.

Expect longer durations, more demanding terrain (steep, snowy, or uneven), and greater exposure to the elements. These tours may involve elevation gain, extended hiking or biking, or navigating deep snow. Previous experience is helpful but not always required.
The route includes about 200 meters of elevation gain/loss, snow-covered trails, and a few short steeper sections. No prior snowshoeing experience needed, but guests should be fit and comfortable spending several hours outdoors in winter conditions.
No call centers, no chatbots — just a small, friendly team who actually lives here in Kirkenes.
We take the time to understand your needs, fitness level and interest for custom travel plans and a unique experience.
