Join us for an ice fishing adventure on one of the most unique lakes in Northern Europe — a border lake shared between Norway and Russia. Surrounded by forest, rolling hills, and the border stations of both countries, this experience perfectly combines one of Finnmark’s favourite winter activities with an introduction to the region’s remarkable geopolitical landscape.
After a short 20-minute drive from Kirkenes, we arrive at the border zone. From here, your guide will lead you safely onto the Norwegian side of the frozen lake. We walk a short distance onto the ice, where your guide drills fresh holes and shows you how to set up a simple rod for Arctic trout or perch. There is no rush — the beauty of ice fishing lies in its stillness, the quiet surroundings, and the chance to enjoy untouched Arctic nature. While we wait for a bite, we gather around a small fire on the ice or on shore (depending on conditions), enjoy hot drinks, and talk about the history of the border, current developments and how they affect everyday life in the far north, as well as the wildlife that thrives in this region.
Whether you catch a fish or simply enjoy the serenity of the Arctic winter, this experience offers a genuine taste of local life in one of Norway’s most fascinating and least visited landscapes.
