Hike to Øretoppen – Summit of Sør-Varanger

Øretoppen rises 465 meters above sea level and is the third highest peak in Sør-Varanger municipality. This guided summit hike takes you through varied Arctic terrain before leading you steadily upward toward one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the region.

The trail gradually gains elevation as the landscape becomes more open and rugged. The final stretch becomes steeper, but the effort is well worth it once the landscape opens up at the top. Throughout the ascent, the scenery shifts from forested terrain to exposed mountain landscape, surrounding lakes and coastline, building anticipation for the views at the top. From the summit, you are rewarded with sweeping views across Bøkfjord, scattered islands, and the vast Arctic coastline. On clear days, the horizon stretches far beyond Kirkenes, offering a true sense of scale, silence, and wilderness. Standing at the top, you feel how remote and powerful this landscape really is.

If you are up for additional distance and weather conditions allow, we can continue approximately 1.5 km further to “Partisanhulen”. This small cave was used by Norwegian resistance fighters in 1944. From this hidden location, they observed German ship movements in the fjord and transmitted intelligence during the final phase of World War II. Visiting the cave adds a powerful historical layer to an already impressive mountain experience.
