Most of the population survived in underground shelters, most notably Andersgrotta, which is now a museum. The German occupation left a significant mark on the town’s physical and cultural history, and the liberation of Kirkenes by Soviet forces in October 1944 is still commemorated each year. You can learn more about this unique history on our minivan tour Spy Games in the Arctic.

Cold War and border history

After the war, Kirkenes found itself on the front line of the Cold War — a small Norwegian town directly on the Soviet border, watched closely by both sides.
